How to Drain a Flooded Basement

Regardless of the source of the water, flooding in a home is a major problem that can cost time and money to repair. Basements are one of the areas that tend to flood often because they are underground. If there are heavy rains or a broken pipe can both lead to flooding in the basement.

  1. Turn off the electricity to your
home. You do not want to step in water in your basement should any
wires be under water. Find the source of the water. If it is a
busted pipe, turn the water off to your entire home, this will stop
the water from continuing to come into your basement. You will need
to call a plumber to make the repair to the pipe.

  2. Draining a basement that has
flooded normally consists of renting a pump that can suck the water
through a long thick hose and move it outside. Since the electricity
is off, make sure you rent one that is powered by gas. This is the
quickest way to drain your basement. The faster you can get the
water out the less damage it will cause. Depending on the amount of
water in your basement should determine the size of the extractor
    you need.

  3. Move the water through the door.
If you are fortunate enough to have a door in your basement that
leads to the outside, use a push broom and start sweeping the water
toward the door to get it outside. You can do this at the same time
the water pump is removing the water by having the end to the
outside hanging out the window in the basement.
