How to Dry Tulip Bulbs

Believe it or not, dry tulip bulbs are not dead. They remain dormant until the next growing season. The process of drying tulip bulbs doesn’t require a lot of time and effort. It only takes a few basic gardening tools to dry and store tulip bulbs.

Items needed:

  • Trowel

  • Sink

  • Water

  • Knife

  • Pan

  • Paper towels

  1. Use a trowel to dig into the ground, and remove the tulip bulbs. Wait until the end of the growing season to perform this operation, or you’ll lose the beautiful flowers. The best time to remove the tulip bulb is around the beginning of the summer.

  2. Take the bulbs to a sink, and turn on the cold water. Use your hands to scrub away the dirt from each bulb. Take the dead leaves off the bulb during this process as well. While washing the bulbs, inspect them for harmful fungus or insects. If there are any defects on the bulb, remove them with a sharp knife.

  3. Place a layer of paper towels inside a pan away from any sunlight. Put all of the cleaned up bulbs into the pan to dry. Leave an inch or two between each bulb so that they dry properly and get plenty of air.

  4. Check on the bulbs over the next three days. They’ll need to be rotated each time you check on them until they are completely dry. If moisture is left on the bulbs for too long, they may begin to rot away and won’t be useful anymore.
