How to Dye Artificial Flowers

Finding flowers that go perfectly with every occasion can sometimes be difficult. An easy solution is to take artificial flowers and dye them. An endless variety of colors can be achieved this way. Whether it's a wedding, holiday or just to decorate a room, dying artificial flowers will provide the perfect hue.

What You Need:

  • Powdered fabric dye

  • Artificial flowers

  • Latex gloves

  • Clothespins

  • Large glass or stainless container

  • Hot water

  • Paper towels

  1. Select a color of powdered fabric dye to use. Choose a combination of dyes to blend together for the desired shade if an exact match cannot be found. Put on latex gloves to protect your hands from the dye and mix the dye with hot water according to directions on the package. Do this in a large glass or stainless container that will not absorb the color and become stained while dyeing the flowers.

  2. Carefully lower the artificial flowers, one at a time, into the container of dye. Using white flowers will provide the truest colors and yield the best results. Completely cover the flowers in the liquid, but do not immerse the stems or greenery. Attach a clothespin to each flower stem, and secure each one along the side of the container to keep them in place. Leave the artificial flowers in the dye for a few minutes or longer, until they reach the desired shade. The darker the color you wish to achieve, the longer the flowers need to stay in the dye bath. This can take up to two hours in some cases.

  3. Remove flowers one at a time, and gently shake each of them over the dye container to remove excess liquid. Place the freshly dyed flowers on paper towels and allow them to dry completely. If the color is too light after the flowers have dried, simply repeat the dyeing process until the desired shade has been obtained.
