How to Dye Leather
Leather is one of the most popular and versatile materials on the market today. It can be used to make anything from clothing to furniture. It is a very durable material and will last for several years if it is properly taken care of and it can also be easily dyed if you get tired of the color.
How to Dye Leather
- Purchase a type of dye that is appropriate to use on the item you are dying. If you are unsure of what type of dye to use refer to the box for things that can be dyed with the product before using. One thing to keep in mind is that the color of the dye can look different in the bottle than it looks on the item you are dying.
- Mix 1 ounce of leather bleach to 1 pint of water to make a cleaner.
- Use a wool dauber or a soft bristle brush to apply the cleaning solution to the surface of the leather.
- Use a spray bottle filled with water to dampen the surface of the leather. You can also use a sponge soaked in water if a spray bottle is not readily available.
- Apply the dye on the leather using long even strokes.
- Apply as many coats of dye as necessary to achieve the color you desire. It is recommended that you allow at least one to two hours to lapse between coats.
- Allow the leather to thoroughly dry and flex it several times during the drying process to prevent it from becoming stiff.
- Buff the leather with a soft cloth to remove any excess dye.
- Spray a coat of leather finish on the surface of the leather.
