How to Eat Healthy Snacks at Night
Having a midnight snack doesn't have to set you back in your nutrition goals. Choosing the right snacks and staying smart about how much you eat at night can keep you on the right track. Rather than going to bed healthy, eat smart before you hit the sheets.
- Decide whether you're actually hungry or just bored. If you had an early dinner, your hunger pangs are likely real and you shouldn't feel bad about having a quick bite before bed. If you had a large dinner, however, you might just be bored. Try drinking a large glass of water instead. If you're still hungry, feel free to have a snack.
- Keep a stash of veggies on hand for late night cravings. A tray of veggies and dip is a great way to fill up before bedtime. Instead of smothering your veggies in ranch, make a fat free sour cream dip. Mix lots of flavorful seasonings in with your sour cream to create a delicious dip that isn't packed with calories.
- Make a healthy yogurt parfait. This small treat is filling enough to satisfy your hunger. Mix some frozen fruit and granola into a dish of low-fat yogurt and enjoy this nutritionally sound snack.
- Eat fruit instead of unhealthy sweets. Although you may be craving a brownie or ice cream, you should choose your favorite fruit instead. A medium orange, a bowl of frozen berries or apple slices are all great night time snacks. Even these naturally sugary treats are suitable for late night snacking.
