How to Eat to Prevent Colon Cancer

Prevent colon cancer by eating foods high in calcium and folic acid. Limit red meats, fatty foods and alcohol. Although not one particular food can prevent colon cancer, following a healthy, well-balanced diet can help lower the risk of the disease.

  • Eat cruciferous vegetables to prevent colon cancer. Cruciferous vegetables include cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli.

  • Limit intake of red meat. Although red meat has not been established as a direct cause of colon cancer, it is associated with a higher risk of developing the disease. In countries that consume less red meat, the rates of colon cancer are lower.

  • Reduce fat intake from meat products. Higher fat consumption, particularly meat products, has been associated with higher rates of colon cancer.

  • Eat more vegetables. A diet higher in consumption of a multitude of vegetables is associated with lower risks of colon cancer.

  • Drink green tea. Tea catechins have an inhibiting effect on colon cancer.

  • Eat a high fiber diet. Diets high in fiber are generally more nutritious and generate greater bowel function. A high fiber diet also aids with prevention of other diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.

  • Consume calcium-rich foods or take supplements. Foods rich in calcium help protect the colon. Yogurt, almonds, walnuts and feta cheese are examples which contain calcium and protect the colon.

  • Include foods high in folic acid. Folic acid protect the colon. Spinach, bananas, egg yolks and peaches are high in folic acid.

  • Limit alcohol. Alcohol consumption can cause a deficiency in folic acid.
