How to Enhance Recovery From Athletic Training
Most people don't realize how important it is to rest your body between hard workouts. Your body’s muscles need time to recover from the strain you put it through while lifting. There are a few things you can do when you're not lifting to help your body recover faster.
- Stretch your muscles after your workout. The best time to stretch is right after you're done, but it can be done later if you absolutely need to. Stretch after you take a hot shower if you wait because your muscles will be warm again. You don't want to stretch muscles that are cold.
- Eat a meal high in protein after your workout. This will help your muscles recover and build muscle mass. There are many protein bars on the market that you can eat right away. Most people only feel like eating a small meal anyway right after a hard workout.
- Get a massage if you have lingering pain in your muscles. Sometimes stretching won't get all the pain out and you might need professional care. Massages can be expensive so choose your visits wisely.
- Hydrate before, during and after your workout. Don't hydrate with caffeine or alcohol. There are also many sports drinks on the market that can replenish your body with the fluids it lost during your training sessions.
- Get the right amount of sleep. Your body won't be able to perform at its highest level without the right amount of sleep. Most people are surprised at how much more weight they can lift after a quality night of sleep.
