How to Epoxy Plumbing Fittings

Epoxy can be used as a temporary fix when you are unable to replace the plumbing fittings in your home. This type of material can be used on any type of fittings whether you have pot metal, copper or plastic. The benefit of epoxy is that it is a material that dries fast.

Items Needed:

  • Sandpaper

  • Epoxy

  • Wooden stick

  • Plastic bowl

  • Fiberglass tape

  1. Shut off the water supply and allow it to sit for a few hours. Ideally, you can let it sit overnight to ensure that the leftover water has completely drained out of the piping. This is essential, because most of the epoxy glues that are on the market require the surface to be completely dry in order for it to adhere to the surface. Although this is the case, there are some that are able to be applied to wet surfaces.

  2. Smooth the area by sanding it in the location of the leak. You do not need a heavy duty machine to do this; instead, use sandpaper and sand the surface by hand.

  3. Mix the epoxy ingredients so that you have the ready-to-use mixture. In order to do this, you will need a wooden stick and a plastic bowl to mix it in. Before applying the mixture to the fittings, you must first ensure that the ingredients are completely mixed.

  4. Apply the mix to the affected area. Once you have covered the leak with the epoxy, place fiberglass tape around the area. Apply another coat on top of the tape and allow the application to dry completely overnight.
