How to Establish a Conservatory

Conservatories are an expansion of a home, made from glass to utilize the sun to create an inviting space for plants and visitors.  A conservatory brings the outside inside, which creates a garden atmosphere without the bugs and weather conditions.   Use a conservatory as a private retreat or a family gathering area.

Instructions

  • Select the conservatory placement and style.  Conservatories are usually attached to the house, so it is important to choose a style whose proportions and materials are complementary to the existing structure.

  • Choose the materials for conservatory construction.   Many conservatories are made of treated lumber and will require frequent painting and upkeep.  Cedar can be used and if left unpainted, will weather to an attractive silver-gray.  Aluminum can be expensive but is almost maintenance-free.

  • Select containers and planters to place inside the conservatory.  Be mindful of how the container placement will affect the space for its intended use.

  • Pick out the plants and flowers that will be housed in the conservatory.  The objective of a conservatory is for the cultivation of plants and flowers that are generally not suited for the local climate. Exotic flowering orchids or lush green tropical plants will help make the conservatory a lush tropical paradise.

  • Plan the conservatory watering system.  It the conservatory is strictly for plants, consider installing an overhead misting system.  If the space will be used for entertaining or relaxing, install a sink or spigot in a convenient corner.

  • Select the furnishings to bring the conservatory together.  Wicker chairs and tables will add to the tropical atmosphere.

  • Choose window tinting or treatments if the sun exposure becomes too harsh when working or entertaining in the conservatory.

  • Hire a professional contractor to build the conservatory to your specifications.
