How to Estimate Electrical Work

If you are undertaking an electrical project for a building, then you will have to come up with an estimate for the cost of the project before you begin. It is important that the elecrical estimate come as close as possible to the actual cost of the project.

Supplies needed

  • Building blueprints

  • Notepad

  • Calculator

  • Pen or pencil

  1. Discuss the specifics of the
electrical work with whoever wants the work done. Know exactly what
they expect to be accomplished with the electrical work. Do not be
afraid to ask any questions which may concern the project. A clear
understanding of what the person wants accomplished will help avoid
any future problems with the project. Write down notes so that you
    do not forget important points.

  2. Analyze the building blueprints.
Get an idea of access points and what you will need to complete the
project. Places that are hard to access may take a while to
complete. The cost of this additional labor time must figure in your
    estimate.

  3. Determine just how much the
material needed for the project will cost. Use your calculator to
add up the costs and write them down.

  4. Determine just how many hours the
project will take. Labor hours are a big part of the final project
cost. Know what your hourly rate will be.

  5. Add any other costs to your
estimate. These costs can include permits and administrative costs.
    Add in a profit margin.

  6. Use the calculator to add all of
these costs together. Add about 10-15 percent to that number. This
number will be your electrical estimate.
