How to Estimate Funeral Costs

The passing of a loved one can be an emotional time for you and your family. However, plans for a funeral need to be made immediately after your loved one’s death. As you plan for a funeral, it can become overwhelming to try to think practically while experiencing an array of different emotions. It is important when planning a funeral to calculate the cost of the funeral to minimize the stress of planning the funeral.

  • Know your budget before you start purchasing or planning anything. This will help you avoid overspending.

  • Make a list of things you want for the funeral. Having a physical list eases your stress since you will be able to see what you have already purchased and what you still need to buy.

  • Go to different funeral homes and inquire what is included with their services. Some funeral homes require only one fee for the use of the parlor and funeral director while others require separate fees for both. Do not call the funeral homes, oftentimes they will not disclose pricing or quotes over the phone.

  • Ask for a quote on any of the items that are not part of the basic package. Get all their estimates in writing. Also ask the funeral home what time frame these quotes are valid for.

  • Shop different vendors before you settle or purchase anything. Do not purchase from the first vendor you go to. Be sure to get written quotes from them as well.

  • Set time in your home, alone or with your family to calculate the different costs from the quotes you received. The physical statements prevent you from guessing prices and will provide a solid estimate of what the funeral costs will be.
