How to Estimate Roofing Costs
The cost of roofing can vary widely, and is directly dependent on a number of factors, some of which include the types of materials that are needed, as well as the amount of materials needed for the particular project. Calculating these costs is not a difficult task once you have the basic information on hand.
Things You Will Need:
- Tape measure
- Shingles
- Determine the area of the roof in question by taking down the length and the width, and multiplying these two figures. You will need to obtain help from an assistant to hold one end of a tape measure while you go to the other side of the roof. This ensures that you get accurate figures without one end of the tape measure moving without you knowing.
- Determine the amount of shingles you will need to complete this roofing project. This type of material generally comes in 25-shingle packages; 75 shingles equate to 100 sq. ft. In order to determine the number of bundles you will need to purchase, simply take the square footage of the roof and divide the total number by 100. The resulting figure will give you the number of bundles you will need to purchase, and the cost per bundle depends on the type of shingles you want on the roof.
- Estimate the amount of time it will take you to complete this project and multiply this figure by your hourly labor rate.
- Add the total estimated amount of labor to the total cost of materials, and you have the estimate cost of replacing a roof.
