How to Evaluate House Designs

The first step to building a house is designing what it will look like. This is a detailed process, covering room design, elevation of the home (how it looks from the outside), the placement of rooms, the design of the kitchen and other common areas.

Evaluating house designs involves considering the look and practicality involved in the home. There are many things to consider.

Exterior:

Curb appeal is very important for a home. Make sure the house is appealing as you drive by. There are other things to consider with your home, however. You want to make sure that the home has the right siding and roof. Vinyl siding will last longer than other types, but it must be cleaned every couple of years. There are different types of roof, including the traditional shingle and metal.

Landscaping:

The right landscaping around your home is important. Newly-built homes have landscaping in the front of the home, and sometimes on the side, with flowers, trees and shrubs. This adds to the curb appeal of the home, as well as your enjoyment of it.

Placement of bedrooms:

There are two types of designs for bedroom placement. The split room plan is quite common. In this plan, the master bedroom is separated from the other two bedrooms to provide privacy. However, when young children are present, you may want the rooms together, and closer to the master bedroom.

Kitchen:

Walk-through kitchens are smaller, with only enough space to cook. They can be cramped, and may not have enough storage. Eat-in kitchens are for dining and spacious cooking, flooring less likely to stain than carpet, also. These kitchens are also larger, with more room for storage and family gatherings.

Common areas:

Dens and living rooms are where families come together. If the children are no longer living in the home, you may opt for a smaller one, unless you frequently entertain guests. Having the right amount of space will maximize the square footage.
