Evaluate your safety program on a continually regular basis. Make sure everyone knows the safety plan. It is a good idea to post instructions in diagram format. Make sure everyone knows how to use specialized safety equipment. You can ask a volunteer emergency response individual to assess your plan. Have a safe meet up place indoors and out.
- Write down what your safety program is. It is important that everyone is on the same page with this. Instructions should be clear and concise.
- Post these instructions in easy to see places. It is best to also have a diagram to visually aid a person looking at it. If there are different areas or building levels, it is a good idea to place one in each place. Indicate with bold markings or colors where the person is standing. Florescent or glow in the dark colors are good.
- Evaluate whether everyone knows where these charts are located by asking them to find it. You could also use written tests or verbal responses.
- Determine if your safety plan is up to current standards. Check out the laws and regulations for your area or building type. For home safety plans look at some generalized current information on the Internet. A homeowner could also ask a volunteer firefighter or other emergency response individual to assess their plan.
- Decide on a meet up area. This is where everyone will meet if there is an emergency. It is good to choose a site easily located in the day or night. Make sure everyone knows where this site is.
- Go over use of any specialized equipment such as fire escape stairs or ladders. These devices should also be placed in an easily accessible location.
- Determine an indoor safe area especially if you are in a tornado zone.
- Practice the drill. Continue practice on a routine basis.
