How to Feed Japanese Maples

Japanese maples come from Japan and China. They do not require a lot of sun, as too much sun can scorch the leaves. These trees will have red or green leaves and are grown from seed. Japanese maples are fairly easy to care for.

Things You Will Need:

  • Garden hose

  • Water

  • Slow-acting fertilizer

  • Small stick

Watering

  1. Water: The tree(s) should be watered one time per day in the morning, but only around the root areas. You should make sure not to water the leaves because the sun can scorch the leaves.

  2. Drain properly: This will prevent the roots from becoming soaked. If the roots are left to soak in too much water, they will rot. Plant the tree(s) on a hill or somewhere that allows the excess water to drain away from the tree.

  3. Repeat: The tree(s) should be watered again late in the afternoon on very hot days. This will ensure that the tree(s) receives enough water.

Fertilizing

  1. Poke holes: These holes should be in the drip line. Place them about two feet apart, at least five to six inches deep and about one to two inches wide.

  2. Use slow-acting fertilizer: Fill each hole with slow-acting fertilizer. Cover each one with soil that is moist. Organic slow-acting fertilizer is recommended.

  3. Water: Once you have covered the holes, water the root areas and drip line.

  4. Repeat: This should be repeated every 20 to 30 days to ensure maximum growth and health.
