How to Figure Square Footage for a Roof

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure the square footage of your roof. If you possess basic math skills you can find the square footage of your roof easily. Even if you hire a professional to install your roof, knowing the square footage can help you decide if the roof estimate is fair.

Figuring the square footage of your roof is relatively simple. All you need is basic math knowledge.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED

  • Tape measure

  • Calculator

MEASURING YOUR ROOF

1. Measure the length and width of the rectangle areas of your roof.

2. Multiply the length by the width for each rectangle.

3. For the triangle areas, multiply the length of its base (longest side) by its height (from the middle of the longest side to the opposite corner) and divide by 2.

4. Once you've measured all areas of your roof, add all the totals together.

5. The combined totals equal your roof's square footage.
