How to File Taxes From Overseas

Citizens of the United States that earned money and lived overseas the previous year still have to file a federal tax return. Living and working outside the country is not an exemption for filing taxes. The Internal Revenue Service offers special forms for those that worked and lived overseas.

  1. Select the correct form to file
from the IRS website. There are forms that address persons that earned an income
that is exempt from taxation. On the IRS website, look at form
    2555-EZ
which is the “Foreign Earned Income Exclusion” form and it will
determine if some or all of your income requires taxation or not. On
the IRS site, there is information on who may or may not qualify for
some or all of their income while working abroad to be exempt from
    taxation.

  2. Fill out the form 2555 completely.
There are instructions to help you, but you can also call the IRS
directly if you do not understand how to complete the form. It is
better to have it filled out correctly then to submit it with the
wrong information because the IRS will have to send it back
    requiring additional information be sent.

  3. Mail this form to the IRS address
before the tax deadline for the year. You can also file an extension
if you do not think that the IRS will receive form 2555 before the
cut off. The exclusions that you may qualify for includes living
expenses and several other situations that can help with your
overall income taxes for the United States.
