How to File Taxes With No Income
There are certain circumstances when someone with no income is still required to file taxes. For instance, students who qualify for financial aid but don’t have income are still required to file. The process is relatively simple, and can be done with a few IRS forms
- Choose what forms to use. There are two separate forms to choose from when filing taxes with no income. Use either form 1040EZ or form 1040A to file federal income taxes. Choose form 1040EZ to file federal taxes by single or joint filers who have no dependents. Choose form 1040A to file federal taxes by persons with dependents. Both forms can be found online via the IRS website.
- Complete all details on the corresponding form. The form will include information such as the filers name and social security number. If filing a joint return or return with dependents the spouse's or dependent's name and social security number will be required also.
- Input filing status and exemptions. On the 1040A form select the filing status such as head of household. Additional information may be required if audited at anytime in the future so fill out all information honestly. The 1040EZ form does not have any section to fill out for filing status or exemptions. Enter “0” for income on line 6 of form 1040EZ and line 15 of form 1040A.
- Complete the chosen form. Within the lower sections fill out the “payments and tax” section if it applies to the filer. When the section is not related to you insert a “0” for NA. Fill out all information regarding deductions on the 1040A form.
- Sign, date and mail off completed forms. The IRS address is located in the last section of the corresponding form or also can be found via the IRS website. There may be a fee to file the taxes or you can file the tax forms via a free e-file service site. To do this, transfer all the information from the paper form to the forms on the e-file site.
