How to File Your Social Security Claim
Social Security is a government program that provides financial benefits to retired persons who are at least 62 years of age. In order to be eligible, a person must have paid into the Social Security system while employed. Survivors of a qualified person, including their spouse or children, are eligible to receive benefits as well.
- Confirm that you meet all of the requirements of filing for Social Security. There are a few different criteria that a person must meet in order to be eligible for Social Security benefits. Visit ssa.gov and take advantage of their online screening tool. Simply answer a few personal questions and determine whether or not you are eligible for Social Security benefits at this time.
- Gather all of the required documents. The Social Security website will provide you with a list of documents and information that you need in order to file for Social Security benefits. You will need the date and place of your birth, your Social Security number, employer and income information for the previous 3 years, and the routing and account number for your bank if you want your benefits deposited directly. Most importantly, you need a copy of your Social Security Statement. If you do not have a copy of your statement, you can request a copy via the link on the website.
- Complete the online application. You will be able to sign the document electronically.
- Submit the required paperwork. You will need to submit additional paperwork with your Social Security claim application. This paperwork can include your birth certificate, naturalization papers, military service documentation and W-2s. These documents can be delivered in person or mailed to your local Social Security office.
