How to File a California State Tax Return

If you lived and worked in California for most of last year, you will be required to file a tax return in the state of California. The deadline for filing with the California Franchise Tax Board is the same as the Federal deadline, which is around the second week of April. Taxpayers can file online, using paper forms, or with the help of an accountant.

You'll need:

  • All your income statements from the last year (all of your W-2, 1099, and other related statements)

  • Your social security number

Instructions:

  1. File online with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This is required to get information such as your adjusted gross income (AGI) which will be used in your California state income tax return. You can do this online by going to the IRS website and following their instructions for filing your taxes. Once you are finished filing your Federal return you will be directed to file your California return on the Franchise Tax Board website. Using your AGI calculations from your federal return, fill out the information requested to file your California taxes.

  2. File using a paper return. You can find them at the local post office. It is also possible to download the forms from the IRS and Franchise Tax Board website and print them out. You'll need the Federal tax forms and the California tax forms as well. Fill out your Federal tax form first to get your AGI and then use that to fill out your California form.

  3. Seek the help of an accountant. This is the most expensive option but it ensures that you will be able to file the most accurate return and either receive the biggest refund or pay the lowest amount of taxes.
