How to Finance Law School
Law school is one of the most expensive types of education to pay for. Many students are not able to pay for law school straight out of pocket and must look for other sources of funding. There are many sources available for law students to fund their education, they just have to know where to look.
- Budget for
you educational needs. Determine how much money you will need to
finance law school. You will also need to factor in living expenses
and the costs of books and supplies. - Complete
a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
This is the form used by universities to determine if a student will
receive any aid from the school or federal government. - Contact the
financial aid office of the law school. Ask if they received a copy
of your FAFSA and if there is any available financial aid for you.
Many graduate schools do not offer grants or aid to students, but
there may be some funds available for you. - Research
scholarships. Scholarships may be based on need or academic merit.
Find scholarships in which you are eligible to apply for. Law school
specific scholarships, minority, women and organizations that you
may be a part of are good sources for scholarships. - Research low
cost loans. Look for interest-free and low percentage loans. These
loans can help to make up any difference (after scholarships and
aid) that you need to pay for your education. - Look for
private loans, which are offered through banks and credit unions.
Private loans are usually the most expensive loans, and should be
considered as last resorts.
