How to Find Computer Courses for Beginners

Basic knowledge of computers is a necessity in today’s world. Just about every job requires computer knowledge. Computer courses for beginners are available at local community colleges, technical colleges, community centers, public libraries and through the Internet. Some classes charge a modest fee, and some may be free.

  • Determine the computer classes you wish to take. As a beginner, you may want to learn the basics of a computer, Windows, how to use email and the Internet. You may also want to learn about word processing in order to type letters or reports.

  • Ask your employer if computer training classes are offered. Many employers want their employees to enhance their skills, and the Human Resources Department can give you more information.

  • Conduct an online search for classes for beginners. Free online classes are offered in computer basics, Internet basics, email basics, Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher and even Social Media. To take an online course, you need to register, create a user ID and password and start training. The great thing about online courses is they are flexible and allow you work at your own pace.

  • Call or visit a local community or technical college. Get a course catalog and check out computer classes and tuition costs. A class at a community or technical college will require a high school diploma or GED before enrolling.

  • Check your local library and community centers for classes available. The library may have a listing of classes offered by different agencies or schools. Usually these classes are free and offered in the evenings.
