How to Find Expiration Dates for Makeup
Many people don't realize how important it is to watch the expiration dates on makeup. Makeup can cause many problems and issues to our body if the dates are overlooked. Using expired makeup can cause allergic reactions, infections and skin problems. Finding the actual expiration date can be tricky and somewhat of a puzzle to locate.
Inspect the package of your new makeup for an expiration date written in month and year format. If you are lucky enough to have this form of expiration date on your package, be sure to write it with a black marker on the actual makeup product itself. Often, the outer packaging is the only place to find the expiration date in this format.
Locate a numbered code on the makeup container. It is usually shown on the bottom or side of the plastic case. The code is a series of numbers that relates to a date of expiration. Generally, you can take the batch code and input it into a batch code calculator on the company's website to determine the year and month it was produced. For example, on a Mac mascara, if the batch code is B210 it has a production date of February of 2010.
- Write down the date of purchase of each of your cosmetic items on a master list. All makeup has a general use-by date and should be thrown away once you reach that date. Liquid face makeup should be thrown out after six months but powdered face makeup can be tossed after two years. Mascara must be thrown away after three months and liquid eyeliner the same. Powdered eye shadow and eyeliner pencils are good for up to two years. Lip products are safe for approximately two years. Any product should be pitched immediately if it has been used while an infection was present.
