How to Find Herb Plants for the Kitchen
Growing fresh herbs inside a kitchen is an easy way for a cook to always have the right flavored plant on hand. Fresh herbs are typically more flavorful than dried store-bought herbs, and will save growers money in the long run.
- Search through local home and garden stores for herb plants or plant starter kits devoted to indoor growing. Indoor plants require special care, so many retailers carry items specifically designed to meet these needs.
- Visit farmer's markets to talk to local herb growers. Visit herb stands, and ask the growers if they sell grown plants. Even if they don't already offer plants for sale, they may create a kitchen planter filled with herbs to sell for a premium price.
- Design an indoor planter to grow herbs inside a kitchen. Use as many individual pots as possible to provide each individual herb the care it needs.
- Buy starter seeds from home and garden stores or from online seed retailers. Although purchasing sprouts is more convenient, you can start your own seeds to save money. Start seeds by planting them according to instructions, watering them and covering them with plastic wrap. Leave the plastic wrap on until the seeds sprout, then remove the covering and provide routine care.
- Place the plants outside during the day in the spring and fall months. During extreme cold and hot weather, use an incandescent lamp to give the plants 13 to 16 hours of sunlight a day.
