How to Find Jobs for the Disabled
Although there are discrimination acts in place to prevent the disabled to be discriminated against in the workforce, this does not mean that this is always the case. Individuals with disabilities should apply to large companies that are more prone to be aware of the disability act, and will hire people with a disability.
- A great way for someone with a disability to increase their employment chances is to learn computer skills. Computer work does not require physical activity or heavy lifting and can often be a great way for physically disabled individuals to earn an honest living.
- The American Association of People with Disabilities offer help to disabled individuals when looking for employment. Training courses can be taken to increase your skills from a distance learning environment. You can also find a list of available positions that are willing to hire a disabled person.
- Consider starting as an intern within a company that you would like to work. Although the position is often not paid in the beginning, you will have the opportunity to show off your skills. Interns are often hired on for permanent positions within the company in which they perform their internship.
- If you believe that you have been discriminated against based on your disability, you can call the hiring manager or supervisor within the company and let them know that you feel as if you are qualified for the position, yet were not given the position based on your ability. Ask them to allow you to show them your potential with a few accommodations to meet your needs.
