How to Find Low Income Apartments for Rent

If you have no income or limited income, you may be eligible for a low income apartment, which will allow your family a stable place to live for a low cost. However, in this economy these type of rentals units are hard to find due to the increasing need. There are a few ways that you can determine where these type of units are located at near you.


  • Housing and urban development, commonly known as HUD, is a great place to begin your search. Use your Internet search engine, and perform a search using the keywords, "HUD housing." This should bring you up a link for the HUD housing website which will offer you a link by state. Click on the link for your state to see what is available in your area.



  • Contact the housing authority for your local area. If you are unsure where this office is located at, you can look it up online by searching for the keywords "housing authority" and the name of the city in which you live, as well as by looking in your local phone book. They will be able to provide you with the listings in the area for this type of housing.



  • Be familiar with the rules and regulations that are associated with this type of housing. There are income limitations that cross reference your family size to see if you are eligible to receive a low income apartment.



  • Ask your friends and family if they know of any low income apartment rentals in the area. Many of these are privately owned, and do not have a sign that advertises that they are a free or low-cost apartment complex. A great way to check is by looking at the main sign for the apartment complex; it will say equal opportunity housing complex in small letters somewhere on the sign.
