How to Find Mental Health Counseling

In times of struggle with relationship problems, extreme stress, depression and other mental health challenges, mental health counseling can make a difference. Finding the right mental health counselor requires a lot of effort. Asking friends and family for referrals, calling hotlines, visiting crisis intervention centers and searching the internet are a few strategies.

1. Speak to trusted friends and relatives. Discuss your need for mental health counseling with someone whose opinion you trust. Often, others in your own personal network may know and can recommend a high-quality professional in the mental health field.

2. Use school resources. If you are a student at a college or university, inquire about mental health services at your school. In some cases, these services may be part of your student healthcare package.

3. Call a mental health hotline. If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide or another situation that requires immediate attention, call a mental health hotline. For example, conduct an internet search for "suicide hotline" and call the number immediately.

4. Ask your family doctor for a referral. Some mental health conditions have physiological causes. Visit your family doctor for a complete check-up and ask for a referral to a mental health counselor if no physical causes are found for the problem.

5. Consult with your religious community. If you are a member of a spiritual or religious community, ask other members if they can suggest a mental health counseling professional. You might also speak to the leaders of the organization about what types of services they provide or recommend.

6. Visit a crisis intervention center. For mental health problems related to alcohol and drug abuse, visit a crisis intervention center. These organizations typically offer mental health services or will refer you to the appropriate professional.

7. Conduct an Internet search. Look for mental health counselors in your geographic location. Gain additional confidence by reading reviews from past clients. When seeking out a mental health professional on your own, ask the counselor if he or she offers a free informational interview to gauge compatibility.
