How to Find Out Who Owns a Property
Sometimes you may want to know who owns a specific property or house. Maybe the house is in disrepair and you would like to ask the owner to take care of their land. Perhaps you have a business development and are interested in knowing if the owner would like to sell the land.
- Call the courthouse for the area in which the property is located. Ask them where you can find the tax assessor rolls for a particular property. Each property in a location is taxed; the tax assessor rolls are public and will tell you the individual who was taxed and their address.
- Search for the city's assessor rolls online. Many municipalities and cities have gone completely electronic. For a small fee you may be able to pull up the assessor rolls on your own and print the information you need from home.
- Find out if the property is rented or if the actual owner is registered on the property tax records. Sometimes the records can be unclear in the case of a long term renter who may help the owner pay for taxes on the property. Make sure you are getting the correct information when searching.
- Hire a professional company to do the legwork for you. A professional people search company may have access to databases you will not be able to access. You can give them the address of the property and ask that they find the owner along with current information of the owner.
- Search voting records. Although not completely reliable a voting record will let you know if someone from that address is registered to vote. The record may not be updated if the owner has moved or if they are not registered to vote.
