How to Find Quality Mental Health Service

There are many different professionals within the field of mental healthcare, and selecting the right one may be difficult for those with no knowledge of mental health issues or experience with the services providing mental care. Those searching for providers of mental health services should therefore be prepared to do some research.

  • Determine the type of care needed, as this is instrumental in finding the appropriate provider. If the person who needs help is a child, then there are counselors and psychiatrists who specialize in helping children. There are drug and alcohol abuse counselors as well as professionals who specialize in treating those who are suicidal. You will also want to make careful notes of the problems and symptoms. These will be useful in finding the right professional.

  • Go to a qualified medical professional like a doctor or nurse. In most cases they will be able to refer you to a mental health professional. A regular physician or an emergency room physician should have resources at-hand to help with this. Another option is to go to a mental health counselor affiliated with a mental health organization. If seeking help for a child, a school counselor is often a good place to start the search for quality mental health care.

  • Call a hotline. Hotlines that provide counseling services may be able to recommend good mental healthcare in your area.

  • Search the Internet for local mental health resources and call them to see if they are able to help or, at least, to refer you to someone who can. In some locations this may take more effort than in others. Start with search engines or look at the main page of your state’s official healthcare website. In many cases the addresses of these websites will end in a '.gov' extension.
