Tipping Guide for Moving Companies

How to Find Self-Packing Moving Companies

Packing your own stuff can help save on costs, as you do not have to pay anyone to help you.   While a traditional moving company would help you to pack, load up and transport your stuff, a self-pack moving company will leave you to do most of that on your own.

Narrow down your choices for a self-pack moving company by focusing on the type of self-pack moving company which you want to work with.  There are basically two kinds of self-pack moving companies: one who will leave you to do all the packing and the driving, and another type who lets you pack but will help you with the driving.  Obviously, the more work that you do, the less you will have to pay.  If you choose a company that helps with the driving, they will usually drop off a rental pod at your residence and pick it up to move it for you, after you have filled it with your stuff.

To find a self-pack moving company, you can use a checklist of various sources:

  • Ask your friends and your peers if they have any experiences with self-pack moving companies.  A friend’s recommendation is often the deciding factor when choosing a moving company.

  • Look at various local newspapers classifieds.  In your local newspaper, look in the “services” section to find companies who provide moving services.  Do not forget to also use classified online advertising, for example, gumtree.com and craigslist.org.

  • Look in your Yellow Pages.  Look under moving companies, and call a few to see their prices and the extent of their services.
