How to Find TV Towers
In mid 2009, all television broadcasters were required to transmit all television signals in the digital standard. In order for viewers to receive these broadcast channels, some headsets require a directional antenna that is pointed toward the television transmission tower.
What You'll Need:
- Computer
- Internet connection
- Compass with heading display
- Visit the antennaweb.org website. This website was put into place by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Consumer Electronics Association as way to provide viewers with detailed information on where to point their antenna as well as how to locate the transmission towers of local TV stations in their area.
- Once on the web page, use your mouse to click on the button labeled "Choose an antenna." Even if you may already have purchased your antenna, following each of the steps will help to guide you on the steps to find the direction to your television station's transmission tower.
- The website will prompt you to enter your complete address information into the form on the screens. The form only ask for a ZIP code, however, to find the exact location of the television tower for entering your precise street address is best. The direction to the TV tower will be based on your exact location.
- Once the search is complete, the page that appears will show you a listing of all the available broadcasts from television stations in your area. That column that is labeled "Compass Heading" and "Miles From" includes specific information to locate TV transmission towers that transmit HDTV signals.
- Utilize a compass to decide the specific direction in which you need to point your outdoor antenna. To orient the compass line up the zero-degree directional heading to true north. Look down on the compass while keeping the zero-degree mark aligned. Locate the compass heading for the degrees that was shown on the website for the television station you want to receive.
