How to Find Vehicle Repair Software

Choosing the right vehicle repair software for your automotive repair business is very important.  The best software will make it easier to track essential tasks and allow you more time to focus on actually working on the vehicles that need your attention.

  1. Identify what you need the vehicle repair software to do.  Along with the capability to create customer profiles and enter relevant data on each car serviced, there is a good chance that the shop will also want the software to be able to apply charges to tasks done as part of car servicing.  A system that will also create items on a calendar to generate reminders when routine maintenance is pending is also very helpful, since it helps to reduce the amount of clerical work that shop employees must do, allowing more time to focus on actually working on the vehicles.

  2. Collect the names and details of several different vehicle repair software packages that are available.  Don’t limit yourself to fee based software only, as there are open source repair software packages that can be downloaded for free and may offer everything you want.

  3. Qualify each of the software packages you have identified.  Begin the process by eliminating any package that does not include the features considered essential for your garage operation.  This will make it easier to focus on the ones that are more likely to meet your needs.  From there, move on to learning more about how each of those essential features work, and what additional features are included that may be of help.

  4. Do some background checking.  Before acquiring any vehicle repair software, find out what past users have to say about the products.  Checking with others in the business as well as online at review sites and even message boards set up for shop owners to exchange information, you can often find out if a given software product is considered stable and reliable, or if there appear to be some operational issues that could cause problems.  This will allow you to further narrow the list down to the best two or three products.

  5. Test drive your top two choices.  Many software manufacturers provide limited time free trials before you buy, making it possible to load the programs and see which one is the best fit.  Try all the features and make sure the program is easy to use, and basically functions in a way that will enhance your business.

  6. Make your final selection.  Once you are sure that a particular vehicle repair software package is the right fit for your business model, make arrangements to acquire the software and install it on your network.  With a little luck, the time saved in managing various tasks will allow the package to pay for itself very shortly.
