How to Find Wholesome Kids Clothing

As children get older, it can be harder and harder to find wholesome and modest clothing for them to wear.  Designers repeatedly produce mature clothing for pre-teens and teenagers.  As a parent, you might be wondering where you can look to find wholesome clothing for your children.

1. Review dress codes.  Schools and organizations frequently develop dress codes to prevent children and teens from dressing too promiscuously. Take the time to review your school's dress code.  Make a note of any items of clothing that are off-limits and discuss the reasoning with your children.  Include a discussion about what items of clothing are appropriate for school.


2. Discuss your expectations with your child.  Children, especially teens and pre-teens, work really hard to fit in and be accepted with their peers.  This includes following the latest clothing trends and dressing like the rest of the kids in school.  Many parents find today's clothing styles to be too mature for their children.  Even though your child may know the rules you have set when it comes to acceptable clothing, they may not understand your reasoning.  Take the time to discuss your expectations with your child and the reasons that certain items such as midriff, low-cut tops or low-rise jeans are not allowed.


3. Shop consignment stores and small boutiques.  Small, locally owned consignment shops and children's boutiques often have a wide variety of appropriate and modest children's clothing.  While boutiques might be a more pricey option when it comes to purchasing clothes, you will often find great deals in local consignment stores.


4. Build a wardrobe around basics.  There are certain articles of clothing that never go out of style, such as great fitting khakis, comfortable jeans, cardigans, pull-over sweaters, polo shirts and v-neck t-shirts.  These items are available at most major retailers.  Add accessories to "dress up" these classics and maintain a modest, yet stylish wardrobe.


5. Seek brands that suit your rules and taste.  Certain brands, such as LL Bean and Lands End, offer stylish and comfortable clothes that are also wholesome and modest.  If your child absolutely must have clothing from a store that you deem inappropriate, compromise and let them select a sweatshirt or t-shirt that suits their style and your desire for wholesome clothing.  Even mature brands offer some modest and comfortable articles of clothing that you can combine with more classic, wholesome pieces to create a great, stylish look.
