How to Find a Criminal Record

With the invent of the Internet it has become easier to find out where you can receive a criminal record, also known as a criminal history. Some states allow access to a copy of your criminal record via an online request and delivery method. Most states require a valid reason for obtaining the report.

  • Start by doing a search with the search engine you find most credible for criminal records (example: search "Indiana criminal history").

  • Search for criminal history or criminal record and the county and state where you think is most appropriate for the search.

  • Understand that some counties will only provide a criminal record for their count and some states only list some of the history, while there may be more if looked at county by county.

  • Understand that limited criminal records require that you check individual counties or have an agency conduct a nationwide or a specific state intensive search.

  • Go to your local police station and county sheriff's department for information. Some may require a release signed by the individual you want the criminal history for. The sheriff's department many times will be the best place to get both the city history and county history for criminal charges and the outcome.

  • Check with your county clerk's office. Some county clerks house the records for criminal histories and may charge a fee if you want a copy of the record.

  • Order a background check from one of the many online companies. Make sure to specify the request to obtain a criminal background check.
