How to Find a Dog Breeder

Before you look for a dog breeder, you need to determine what sort of dog you want. Some dogs are high-energy and like to run and play, while other dogs are more sedentary and are happy to sit with you on the couch. Some breeds are better with children than others are. Once you've determined the type, you can look for a breeder.

  1. Check online websites for breeder referral contacts, such as the American Kennel Club. These contacts typically are breeders or volunteers from a breed club who can put you in contact with a reputable breeder in your area.

  2. You can also find breeders from veterinarians, breed rescue societies and by visiting dog shows. Reputable breeders do not sell their dogs in pet stores.

  3. Visit the breeder and inspect the facilities to make sure the breeder is not running a puppy mill. Dogs from puppy mills are more likely to be in poor health and have temperament problems. A good breeder keeps the dog in the home, not outside in kennels.

  4. Your experience with the breeder should be a pleasant one. You should be able to see where the dogs spend most of their time. In addition, the dogs should be happy and healthy. The breeder should also provide you with references.
