How to Find a Good Auto Mechanic
When your car has an issue that needs fixing, finding the right mechanic is essential. Making a poor mechanic choice can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars and cause many headaches. Evaluating each possible mechanic before making your decision can make the repair process smoother.
- Find out what car makes the mechanic specializes in. A mechanic with vast knowledge about your particular make and model may charge less, as the job is easier for him. Most importantly, choosing a mechanic who specializes in your car's specific brand can do a better, more thorough job than less experienced mechanics. By getting the work done right the first time, you avoid repeat visits due to unresolved problems.
- Call shops and get quotes before making an appointment. Although this step may be difficult if your car problem is undiagnosed, you can perform this step for routine maintenance or known problems.
- Ask friends, family members or colleagues for referrals. Asking for a review is a good way to get to know the mechanic and his shop before making an appointment.
- Opt for mechanics with ASE and Triple A certification. Possessing either of these certifications is an indication that the shop has undergone some sort of testing or quality verification process.
- Check the shop's Better Business Bureau rating. Although this may not return any results for small hometown mechanics, you may be able to see complaints filed by past customers. Check out the shop's rating and complaint history to help form your decision.
