How to Find a Job While in College

Many college students need to work to help pay for their tuition and other expenses. Some students are able to work part time for the school while others choose to work off campus. The student will need to find a job that does not affect the class schedule or study time.

  • Prepare a resume before you try to find a part-time job. Include your major and grade point average (GPA) on your resume. List a few teachers as references for an employer to contact.

  • Ask friends who work part time if their employer is still hiring. Find out who to talk with and set up a time to meet. Fill out an application for employment and attach your resume. If you receive an offer of employment, set up your work schedule so your job does not interfere with your classes.

  • Check for a job on the school’s bulletin board. Most schools have an online bulletin board that you can read to try and find a good part-time job. You can also ask your advisor to help you find a position that will help you with your career. For example, if you are majoring in accounting, ask your advisor to help you get a part-time bookkeeping job.

  • Find an online job website to look for work. Type in the city where you want to work and sort the list to only show part-time positions. Apply with an employer by completing an online application. Make sure that you also upload your resume when you fill out the application.

  • Check the local paper to look for a part-time job. Contact an employer to find out the hours you need to work to make sure you will not have to miss any classes. You should also arrange your study time around your work schedule so your grades do not suffer.
