How to Find a Legal Will

Legal wills are very common in the lives of many people. Finding the legal will can be the tricky part for those who need the information. Checking the legality of the will is necessary so that the proper assets are given to the right people.

  1. Talk to the family lawyer to see if the will was verified with them. Often times a will is completed in secret to keep all information safe. The will is then handed over to the family lawyer for safekeeping. Check with the lawyer to see if the person who passed away left the will with the lawyer.

  2. Spend the day looking through paperwork at the home of the person. Sometimes a will is hidden away for safekeeping. No one knows when the day will come when the will is needed. Therefore, many people just set it aside and almost forget about it.

  3. Check with family members or close friends. In some cases, a copy will be made of a will and given to family members for safekeeping. Several copies are important just in case the original is lost. You can make copies legal by getting them notarized.

  4. Look over all files on the computer. With technology, more and more people are storing files on the computer. You may find the will stored on the hard drive of the home computer. You will have to check with a lawyer to make sure this is a legitimate copy of the person’s will.

  5. Seek legal advice from a lawyer. After you have found the will, it is still best to seek legal advice from a lawyer.
