How to Find a Mobile Veterinarian
Taking a pet to a veterinarian can be difficult if the animal doesn’t like car travel, or is too sick. Veterinarians who are experts in caring for farm animals have always made house calls. But this has not been the case for dogs, cats and other small pets until recently.
- Contact your veterinarian to see if they have mobile service before switching vets. If you are a patient who is established, it is likely the service will be made available, even if it is not offered to every single patient.
- Seek referrals for a mobile veterinarian from friends and family because they may have used such a service. They can recommend which mobile veterinarian to use as well as prepare you for what to expect.
- Get a hold of the American Association of Housecall & Mobile Veterinarians for a list of mobile vets in your local area. You can find the organization online at http://www.housecallvets.org. You can also find a local mobile service online when you seek information for your city and state in a search engine.
- Contact different veterinarians who do have mobile services to ask about prices, types of assistance offered, and scheduling opportunities to find the right fit for your budget and pet's needs.
- Go to the office to meet the vet personally and take a tour in the mobile service van, if you prefer. This should be arranged ahead of time so you will not disturb the veterinarian's care of already scheduled pets.
