How to Find an Avian Veterinarian

If you own or plan on owning a bird, knowing where to find an avian veterinarian is a good idea. A bird needs a specially trained doctor who is knowledgable and adept in handing routine and medical emergencies. Finding an avian veterinarian is easier than you may think.

  • Ask the pet shop where you purchased your bird if the employees know of any avian veterinarians in the area. Sometimes they will be able to give you a referral. If you have any friends that own birds and live in close proximity, ask if they have an avian vet they would recommend.

  • Search online or look in your phonebook to locate an avian vet in your area. Most vets that see birds will advertise this online or in their phonebook listing. Sometimes veterinarians that see exotic animals are more open to seeing birds than a regular veterinarian who specializes in treating dogs and cats. There are also forums for bird owners online where you can discuss your bird and trade tips. You can register to become a member and ask if anyone on the forum can recommend a good avian vet in your area. Many people on forums have had years of experience with birds and are knowledgeable at locating a qualified vet.

  • Visit the Association of Avian Veterinarians website to search for current vets that will see birds. Many vets will list themselves if they are willing to treat birds. Not all vets listed are Board Certified, but many have experience or are close to obtaining a certification. If you want an avian vet who is Board Certified, you may find one by searching the American Board of Veterinarian Practitioners. This website can help you locate a Board Certified avian vet in your area.
