How to Find the Best Bathroom Wall Tile Designs

Replacing the bathroom tile on your wall can add a whole new world of color and texture. You are probably most accustomed to the standard ceramic tile option. While it looks nice and is affordable, there are so many other wall tile types available, not to mention the kinds of designs you can create for backsplashes, countertops, floors and wall surfaces.

  1. Measure the space available for your tiling project. A small bathroom can lend itself to using smaller tiles, but that is not always necessarily the case. Once you know the dimensions, it is easier to select tiles that work well within those conditions.

  2. Decide on a style for your bathroom decor. Do you want it to look retro 1960s, or polished and modern? Do you love the southwest look or NYC subway chic? All of these themes stipulate your tile selection.

  3. Establish a budget. If you are trying to complete this project with pocket change, maybe ceramic tiles aren't looking so bad. However, if you have a little more to spend, try recycled glass tiles or natural stone tiles, or at least use a few as accents.

  4. Visit tile showrooms and your local hardware stores. Gather samples of tiles you like, and once you are home, lay them out on the floor to create possible patterns. You might be surprised about how two different tile types react together.

  5. Purchase decor magazines like ReadyMade, DIY Magazine, and Better Homes and Gardens. These magazines provide endless decorating ideas for you to get ideas from. These magazines can also be found at your local library. You won't be able to tear pages of them for ideas, but most libraries will allow you to make photocopies.

  6. Watch decorating shows on HGTV and TLC. These channels have a ton of shows that can give you great ideas on what tile design you want.  After the show you can visit their website to obtain the brands they used or a step-by-step tutorial on how to install them yourself.

  7. Ultimately, your tiles should be affordable, durable and practical, but they should address the larger issues of creating a style that fits you and makes your bathroom look complete.
