How to Find the Right OB-GYN
Finding a good doctor that you feel comfortable with can be a difficult thing to do, even if it is just for a sore throat. Searching for an OB-GYN that you are at ease with can be an even harder task. An OB-GYN specializes in the female reproductive organs in both the pregnant and non-pregnant state. These tips will help you find an OB-GYN that is right for you.
- Ask your girlfriends if they have an OB-GYN that they trust and recommend. Sometimes word of mouth is the best way to find a doctor.
- Look in the phonebook and online to find your local OB-GYNs. Once you have done this, look them up online to see if patients have written reviews about them. Websites such as vitals.com allow you to see information such as how many years they have been in practice, where they graduated, if they are board certified and what insurance plans they accept.
- Check with your insurance provider to see if they have a list of doctors that your insurance plan will cover. Some insurance companies have preferred providers in which they will cover more of the costs than if you choose to select a doctor who is not on the list.
- Express your concerns or worries if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. Based on the OB-GYN’s responses, you may decide that you really like the doctor or would feel comfortable with someone else.
- Ask the OB-GYN about their practices and opinions on issues. It may be important to ask about their views on such things as induced pregnancy, continuous electronic fetal monitoring, episiotomy, and support people present during birth. Also be sure to inquire if they will be present during labor or at what locations they deliver babies.
- Schedule an appointment to talk with the doctor in person. Not only will this allow you to see if you like the OB-GYN but will also give you a chance to see the office and visit with the support staff. You should be comfortable with everyone at the practice as there is a good chance that they may provide care for you at some point.
