How to Fit Interior Doors

Knowing how to fit your interior doors is essential when you are trying to accomplish a remodeling project. This is a task that does not require too much effort and can be done in a relatively short amount of time. Once you have the correct measurements, you can proceed to installing your new doors.

What You Will Need:

  • Wood shims

  • Level

  • Nails

  • Hammer

  • Tape measure

  • Handsaw

  1. Take the door you are fitting and place it in the position of the doorway. Make sure that the edges are aligned correctly and that they are straight with the edges of the doorway opening.

  2. Place wood shims into the door frame once you have properly positioned the door. Use a hammer to insert the shims 1 foot apart from the next on the hinged side of the doorway. Once this is secured, ensure that the same side is flush with the wall.

  3. Anchor the side of the door that contains the hinge completely to the wall. Insert nails through the exact location where you positioned the spacers. Repeat this process with the top portion of the wall to ensure the door jamb is completely secured.

  4. Close the door and measure the space between the bottom of the door and the floor. This space should measure 1/8 inch. Ensure that the door frame is secured on all sides to the door jamb in the opening.

  5. Use a handsaw to cut the extending portion of the wood shims. Make sure they are even with the wall and door frame for a finished product. When using the tool to cut the shims, make sure that you do not create any damage on the jamb or the door.
