How to Fit a Horse Harness Collar

It's very important to have your horse harness fitted properly because you could easily injure the horse. It's also important to consult with a local veterinarian to have an expert opinion. You might have to replace the harness if there is too much damage.

  1. Check the blinders; make sure the eye it at the middle of the blinder. Also make sure the blinders aren’t touching the horse’s eyes or eyelashes. If you don't have blinders than you obviously don't have to worry about this part.

  2. Make sure the throat latch isn't too tight. Remember that it only needs to be tight enough so that the bridle doesn’t fall of the horses face. Your horse could easily choke if the latch is too tight. This is something that should be checked every time you put the harness on the horse.

  3. Check the bellyband and girth to make sure they're not too tight. You should be able to slide one finger between the bellyband and girth easily. This is also something that needs to be checked often.

  4. Adjust the back saddle so that the horses back doesn't literally touch it. This is very important because you could easily injure the horse’s spine.

  5. Make sure the breeching strap is adjusted properly. The strap should be fairly tight on the horse’s rump so it can help brake a carriage that's going downhill.

  6. Double check everything just to be certain. Remember that one little mistake could cause major problems.
