How to Fit a Horse Riding Helmet
Your helmet is the single most important piece of safety gear that you wear when horseback riding. In the event of a fall, your helmet will protect your head from permanent brain and spinal damage. It is extremely important that your horseriding helmet fit properly.
Things You Will Need:
- Soft fabric measuring tape
- Measure the rider's head. Place a soft fabric measuring tape around the rider's head to measure the circumference in inches. Place the tape around the rider's forehead, just above his or her ears. Be sure that you do not pull the tape so tight that it is uncomfortable. This could result in purchasing a helmet that is too snug.
- Determine your helmet size. The sizing method that is used varies by manufacturer. Some horse riding helmet manufacturers use the rider's head measurement in inches in order to determine their helmet size. Other manufacturers use the rider's hat size to determine the helmet size that they need. Still, others simply label their helmets Small, Medium and Large. Knowing your hat size and head measurements are useful when shopping for a new horse riding helmet.
- Try on some helmets. Even if you plan to order your new helmet online, it is in your best interest to visit a traditional tack shop and try on a few different helmets. Try different sizes and brands to determine what riding helmet fits you best. Often times, the shop owner will be able to help you find the size that you need.
- Test the fit. Put the helmet on your head and adjust the interior lining. The helmet should fit snugly and securely. Adjust the chin strap to fit appropriately. Once the helmet is adjusted, move your head back and forth from side to side. Nod. Bend down to pick something up off the ground. The helmet should remain secure and should move with your body. A helmet that is too loose can be dangerous. If the helmet does not fit well after making the obvious adjustments, try a different size or brand.
