How to Fit an Athletic Cup

There are few things in this world less pleasant than an inadvertent groin injury. Therefore, an athletic cup is a very important and necessary piece of sports equipment. It not only prevents injury, but also ensures minimal movement which can lead to discomfort. An athletic cup must be fitted properly to ensure full protection.

  1. Ensure a proper fit. An athletic cup cannot be too tight nor too loose. An overly restrictive cup can cut off circulation; an overly loose cup can result in slippage and reduced coverage. Cups come in a range of sizes and should fit the wearer's body type and size. Make sure to read the sizing charts and description on the packaging. Each manufacturer has slightly different sizing.

  2. Put on a pair of men's underwear briefs. The crotch of the underwear's area is a great sizing indicator. If the cup is larger than the crotch area, it is too big. If it is smaller than the crotch area, it is too small.

  3. Purchase a jockstrap. Since athletic cups can only be held in place with jockstraps, several should be purchased at the same time as the cup. The elastic should be in good condition and should still spring back when stretched. If the elastic is frayed or worn, a new jockstrap should be worn. Jockstraps can be worn with or without underwear depending on preference. Many athletes choose to wear protective garments such as underwear or athletic shorts under the cup to minimize chaffing and irritation. Athletic cups and jockstraps should never be shared and should be thoroughly cleaned after each wearing.
