How to Fix Basement Concrete Blocks
Concrete blocks in basement areas can become damaged with time, making it necessary to repair them. Make sure that you loosen all damaged material and prepare a concrete patch compound before you begin your job, so that you can repair blocks properly and your basement will remain in good condition.
Things You'll Need
- Wire bristle brush
- Hammer
- Chisel
- Push broom
- Pieces of plastic
- Concrete patch material
- Spray bottle
- Trowel
- Locate the blocks in your basement that need to be repaired. Look for blocks that have become damaged and are falling apart.
- Scrape loose material from the concrete blocks with a wire bristled brush to remove pieces that easily come loose. Look for areas where chunks of concrete are stuck in cracks of damaged concrete blocks and use a hammer and chisel to break up the chunks allowing them to fall out.
- Clean the concrete that has come off the damaged blocks by using a push broom to sweep the area. Throw the concrete pieces in the trash.
- Prepare the area underneath the damaged blocks by spreading a large piece of plastic on the floor. This will keep the floor protected from any patch material that spills or falls from the area where you are working.
- Purchase concrete patch material from the store and mix it with water to create your patch compound. Read the instructions on the package of the material so that you know how much water you will need to mix in.
- Spray water on the area that has been damaged using a spray bottle to dampen the area and begin filling damaged blocks. This can be done by placing patch compound onto a trowel and using the trowel to push the compound into holes and cracks. Remove any excess compound from concrete blocks by scraping it away with your trowel.
- Inspect the areas that you have repaired making sure that you have filled all cracks and holes with patch material. Place a piece of plastic over the entire repaired area and let it sit for 72 hours. After this time you can remove the plastic and use the basement area again.
