How to Fix Clogged Sinks

A clogged sink can bring on panic for some homeowners. If your kitchen sink is clogged it can lead to many inconveniences for you and you will want to get it fixed as soon as possible. There are many different things that you can try at home on your own to unclog a sink drain that does not require calling out an expensive plumbing service to perform the job.

Plumbing Auger - A plumbing auger is commonly referred to as a snake auger. You can rent or purchase one at your local home improvement store in the plumbing section. This long metal rod is used to manually break up the cause of your clog. Insert the curved end of the metal rod into your drain and then feed through until you have found the source of the clog. Turn the rod and break your clog up. Remove the auger and run the water to remove the rest of the debris that was clogging your sink drain.

Plunger - A standard household plunger can often break up and remove a clog in your sink drain. This should be the first thing that you try. If your blockage is not too severe it may loosen and wash away the source of the clog. Make sure that the surface of the plunger is able to make contact with the surface of your drain so that proper suction can be obtained. You may need to repeat the process a couple of times to thoroughly remove your clog.

Commercial Cleaners - There are many different commercial drain cleanings available on the market such as Drano. You can purchase drain cleaners at your local home improvement or general store fairly inexpensively. Be aware that these cleaners contain harsh chemicals and you should wear safety gear at all times when working with them. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended directions for application and safety procedures when working with the specific product that you purchase.
