How to Fix Matted Cat Fur
Cats will sometimes get mats in their fur, especially cats with long hair. If your cat has a tangled mess in his coat, you can easily get it out, as long as your cat cooperates. If your cat gives up on this project before you do, wait a little while and then finish the job.
Supplies
- Soft bristled grooming brush
- Fine-toothed cat comb
- Grooming powder or talcum powder
- Round edge scissors (optional)
Instructions
- Place all the supplies you will need within reaching distance.
- Hold your cat in your lap and pet him.
- Pick up the brush and brush his fur in the direction that the hair grows. Start brushing at the head and continue to the base of his tail. Do not brush over the mat, as this can pull his hair.
- Use a fine-toothed cat comb to remove the loose hair that came out from brushing.
- Sprinkle the powder on and around the matted fur. This will help to separate the hairs in the mat.
- Rub the powder into the matted fur with your fingers.
- Use your fingers to gently pull the matted hairs apart. Be very careful so that you do not pull your cats hair while doing this.
- Discard any loose hairs that come out while you are untangling the mat.
- Work on untangling the mat until all the hairs are free.
- Brush out the untangled mat with the soft bristled brush.
If you are unable to untangle the mat with your fingers, follow these steps to cut the mat out of the fur.
- Position the fine toothed comb underneath the base of the mat next to your cat’s skin.
- Hold the comb so that the matted fur is up and away from your cat's skin.
- Use the round edge scissors to cut out the mat that is above the teeth on the comb.
- Remove the comb and comb out any loose hairs on your cat's coat.
