How to Fix PC Runtime Errors

A runtime error occurs when a program is running. This is in contrast to a compile error, which occurs when the program is compiled. Users can resolve some types of runtime errors on a personal computer by closing, updating or reinstalling the faulty program.

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with Internet access

  1. Close the program with the runtime error. Hold the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" keys down at the same time if you are running any version of Windows released since 2001. This will open the task manager window, which displays a list of all the programs currently running on your PC.

  2. Select the program in the task manager window that has a runtime error, and click the left mouse button on the End Process button. This will close the program.

  3. Access the website for the software's manufacturer, and search for the software with the runtime error. Download any patches or upgrades for the software and install them per the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. Restart the program, and duplicate the conditions in effect when the program experienced the runtime error.

  5. Select the Start button and left click on the control panel. Double click on the icon entitled "Add or Remove Programs." Select the program with the runtime error, and left click on the Remove button. Follow the prompts to remove the program from your PC.

  6. Install the program from scratch according to the manufacturer's instructions. This generally involves double clicking on the installation program and following the prompts.
